Data Interpretation (DI)

Section A ยท Futures First International โ€” Market Trading Intern OA

๐Ÿ“Œ What Has Been Asked (OA & Rounds)

FormatTypical Question Style
OA (MCQ, set of 3-5 Qs per chart)Given a bar chart of quarterly revenue for 5 companies โ€” "Which company had the highest growth%?"
OAGiven a pie chart of market share โ€” "If total market is โ‚น50 Cr, what's Company C's revenue?"
OAGiven a table of production data โ€” "Ratio of total production in 2022 to 2023?"
OA"What is the average monthly sales for Company X over 6 months?" (from a line graph)
OA"By what % did exports exceed imports in Year 3?" (from a dual bar chart)
BuzzerQuick calculation from a displayed table โ€” speed matters more than complexity
Interview"Here's a P&L sheet โ€” what's the margin trend?" โ€” real-world DI

DI in FF is about speed of calculation, not complexity of data. The charts are simple; the test is whether you can extract and compute in 30 seconds.

๐Ÿง  Types of Data Representations

1. Tables

  • Rows and columns of numerical data
  • What to watch for: Row/column totals, comparing specific cells, ratios between rows

2. Bar Charts

  • Simple bar: One variable per category
  • Grouped bar: Multiple variables side by side
  • Stacked bar: Components shown as segments
  • What to watch for: Heights, differences, percentage of total

3. Pie Charts

  • Shows parts of a whole (100%)
  • Key formula: Value = (Degree/360) ร— Total = (Percentage/100) ร— Total
  • What to watch for: Central angles (360ยฐ = 100%), comparing sectors

4. Line Graphs

  • Shows trends over time
  • What to watch for: Slope (growth rate), intersections, peaks/troughs

5. Mixed / Caselets

  • Paragraph describing data + questions
  • Requires you to build your own table from text

โšก Speed Tricks for DI

Trick 1: Percentage Calculation โ€” Fraction Approximation

Instead of computing exact percentages, use nearest fractions:

1/6 โ‰ˆ 16.67% 1/7 โ‰ˆ 14.3% 1/8 = 12.5% 1/3 โ‰ˆ 33.3% 2/7 โ‰ˆ 28.6% 3/8 = 37.5%

Example: "What % is 143 of 500?" โ†’ 143/500 = 286/1000 = 28.6% โ‰ˆ 2/7

Trick 2: Growth Rate Quick Calc

Growth% = (New โˆ’ Old) / Old ร— 100

If Old = 400, New = 480:

Change = 80. Growth% = 80/400 = 1/5 = 20%

Trick 3: "Of Total" Calculations in Pie Charts

If sector is 72ยฐ out of 360ยฐ:

Fraction = 72/360 = 1/5 = 20% If total = โ‚น25 Cr โ†’ this sector = โ‚น5 Cr

Trick 4: Ratio Comparison Without Division

To compare A/B vs C/D: cross multiply.

A/B vs C/D โ†’ compare Aร—D vs Cร—B If Aร—D > Cร—B โ†’ A/B > C/D

Trick 5: Average from a Table

Don't add all numbers then divide. Use assumed mean:

Values: 312, 298, 305, 320, 315 Assume mean = 310 Deviations: +2, โˆ’12, โˆ’5, +10, +5 = 0 Average = 310 + 0/5 = 310

Trick 6: "Approximate, then eliminate"

DI answers are MCQ with options usually 5-10% apart. A quick mental estimate eliminates 3 of 4 options.

๐ŸŽฏ Common Question Patterns

Pattern 1: "Find the ratio"

"What is the ratio of Company A's sales in Q1 to Company B's sales in Q3?" โ†’ Read two values, simplify the fraction.

Pattern 2: "Percentage share / contribution"

"What percentage of total production does Plant X contribute?" โ†’ Value of X / Total ร— 100

Pattern 3: "Highest/Lowest growth"

"Which year showed the highest percentage increase in revenue?" โ†’ Calculate growth% for each year, compare. Shortcut: If the absolute increase is similar, the one with the smaller base has higher growth%.

Pattern 4: "Average over a period"

"What is the average quarterly profit over 4 quarters?" โ†’ Sum รท 4. Use assumed mean if numbers are close.

Pattern 5: "Difference / Excess"

"By how much did exports exceed imports in Year 2?" โ†’ Subtraction. May ask as absolute or percentage.

Pattern 6: "If total changes, find new value"

"If total market grows 15% and Company C's share stays same, what's C's new revenue?" โ†’ Old value ร— 1.15

๐Ÿ“ Practice Set: Table-Based DI

Data: Annual Sales (in โ‚น Crore)

Company20202021202220232024
A120150180200250
B200220210240280
C80100130160200
D300280310350400
E150160175190220

Q1. Which company had the highest growth% from 2020 to 2024?

A: A: (250โˆ’120)/120 = 130/120 โ‰ˆ 108%. B: 80/200 = 40%. C: 120/80 = 150%. D: 100/300 = 33%. E: 70/150 = 47%. Company C with 150% growth.

Q2. What is the ratio of total sales of A and C in 2022 to total sales of B and D in 2023?

A: A+C in 2022 = 180+130 = 310. B+D in 2023 = 240+350 = 590. Ratio = 310:590 = 31:59

Q3. What is the average annual sales of Company D over 5 years?

A: Sum = 300+280+310+350+400 = 1640. Avg = 1640/5 = โ‚น328 Cr

Q4. In which year was the total sales of all companies the highest?

A: 2020: 850. 2021: 910. 2022: 1005. 2023: 1140. 2024: 1350. โ†’ 2024

Q5. By what % did Company B's sales change from 2021 to 2022?

A: (210โˆ’220)/220 ร— 100 = โˆ’10/220 ร— 100 = โˆ’4.55% (decline)

๐Ÿ“ Practice Set: Pie Chart DI

Data: Market share distribution (Total market = โ‚น200 Cr)

SegmentShare
Electronics30%
Clothing25%
Food20%
Pharma15%
Others10%

Q6. Revenue of Clothing segment?

A: 25% of 200 = โ‚น50 Cr

Q7. If Electronics grows 10% and total market stays same, what's its new share?

A: New Electronics = 60 ร— 1.1 = 66. New share = 66/200 = 33% But wait โ€” if total stays same at 200 but Electronics grew, other segments must have shrunk. The question likely means Electronics' revenue grows. New share = 66/(200โˆ’60+66) = 66/206 โ‰ˆ 32%

Q8. Central angle for Pharma sector?

A: 15% of 360ยฐ = 54ยฐ

๐Ÿ”‘ Exam Strategy

  • DI questions come in sets (3-5 questions per chart/table) โ€” invest 30 seconds understanding the data, save time on all sub-questions
  • Approximate aggressively โ€” MCQ options are spaced apart enough that estimation works
  • Do easy questions first within a set โ€” some sub-questions in a DI set are much harder than others
  • Don't re-read the table for every question โ€” build a mental model of the data first
  • For ratios: cross-multiply to compare, don't actually divide
  • For percentage change: "change รท old base" โ€” always check which is the base (common mistake: dividing by new instead of old)
  • Time allocation: DI sets are high-reward if you're fast at mental math โ€” do them after quick-fire quant, before reasoning puzzles
